Dartmouth Nostalgia

The cool rush of a skier whizzing by; the white, glistening slopes.

Attendees of the Swann Galleries’ Vintage Posters Sale on February 4 experienced the great outdoors of the past during the annual Winter Carnival in Hanover.

The sale opened with 60 assorted ski posters, among them nine for the annual Dartmouth Winter Carnival, dating from 1936-1961. A 1936 design by Dwight Clark Shepler was the earliest Dartmouth Carnival poster Swann has ever offered. The sunny image of a down-hill skier advertises Slalom Races, Jumping, and Joring for a combined admission of $1.00.

Other highlights among American ski posters were mid-1930s examples encouraging supporters of the sport to Send Your Team To Mt. Rainier and the Olympic Tryouts, and Moosilauke /Downhill Championships, 1935; advertisements for Sun Valley, Idaho; and Amy Jones’s image of a ski jumper for Lake Placid 1980.
